Melbourne's best scrolls

Try classic cinnamon scrolls loaded with icing, visit the famous Cinnabon shop or seek out Swedish-style cardamom buns.

Austro Bakery

Tucked away on a North Melbourne backstreet is a tiny bakery that packs a punch. Between the pretty pastries and fluffy slabs of focaccia at Austro Bakery you’ll find signature Vienna coffee scrolls. These rounds of buttery Danish pastry are smeared with a generous dollop of coffee condensed milk icing. Be quick and get there early to avoid scroll regret.

Cinnabon

With 40 years of scroll making experience under its belt, Cinnabon has the recipe down pat. And with its first CBD outpost in Melbourne, you can now get your hands on this famous treat. Made in-store, you can watch the masters at work as they lovingly roll out the dough and fill it with just the right amount of cinnamon sugar. Go big and add sundaes, layered desserts and signature drinks for the ultimate sweet feast.

Sunny Day Scrolls

This cute corner shop is dedicated to just three items – coffee, matcha and scrolls. Pop into Sunny Day Scrolls and pick up one of these yummy baked goods. For the traditionalists try the no-fuss cinnamon scroll coated in perfect sweet and sticky icing. Or venture out and tuck into signature flavours like crème brûlée, Dubai chocolate and Biscoff.

Mörk

The team at Mörk took 6 months to get its cardamom bun just right – now that’s dedication! These swirling buns are bold on flavour with hits of Ceylon cinnamon and freshly ground cardamom. Then in between each buttery layer you’ll find rich caramelised chocolate. Find these at Mörk Chocolate Brew House in North Melbourne and Mörk Chocolate City on Equitable Place.

Hector's Deli

The sandwich aficionados at Hector’s Deli have branched out and are offering fluffy scrolls fresh out of the oven. Flavours are simple with fillings like classic cinnamon and coffee raisin. Pick one up with your morning brew or as an after-sanga treat from all locations. Hot tip: look out for rotating scroll specials like apple crumble.

Maison Bake

Go full Scandi and try a traditional cardamom scroll. If you ask us, some of the best can be found at Maison Bake. This hard-to-find bakery sits right at the end of Corrs Lane in the heart of Chinatown. Swing by in the morning to get your hands on this Swedish treat before they sell out. And while you’re there, try one of the signature drinks topped with pudding.

Baker Bleu

If you prefer a little less icing on your scroll, head straight to Baker Bleu. Delightfully airy and delicate, these freshly baked beauties are all about the dough. Soft in the middle and gooey on the outside they pair well with your morning cuppa. Buy a pack from the shop at 183 Domain Road in South Yarra to take home when you’re on your next bread run.
