The gozleme guide to Melbourne
Can’t get enough of these Turkish toasted flatbreads? From gozleme to borek and more, we've found some of the best in Melbourne.
Göz City
The gozlemes are authentic Turkish delights at Göz City. Hand-rolled and cooked on a hot plate, they’re crispy on the outside and meltingly oozy inside. Order a board topped with your choice of goz. Traditional cheese and spinach, minced meat, herbed chicken, or mushroom and veg. You’ll find Göz City in Madame Brussels Lane and Little Collins Street.
ILoveIstanbul
Be transported to Istanbul with some of the best gozleme in Melbourne. Find ILoveIstanbul on Lygon Street in Carlton. Serving up delicious handmade food by three generations, this Turkish gem is a must-try. Along with cheesy gozleme, kebab meat and salty olives, grab sweet treats like traditional Turkish delights, baklava and semolina cake.
Borek Shop
This Queen Victoria Market stall is run by the same team as Borek Bakehouse. It keeps market hours, so closes on Mondays and Wednesdays. Nonetheless, the Borek Shop is an essential stop in your quest for Melbourne’s best gozlemes. Join the legendary throng jamming the Dairy Produce Hall. Your patience will be rewarded with spicy lamb boreks and cheesy gozlemes straight from the griddle.
Gozleme King
At Gozleme King in Docklands, there’s a gozleme for every taste. All-day breakfast gozlemes pair feta, mushroom and egg, and maybe chorizo on the side. Gourmet gozlemes cross the continents, from tandoori chicken to Mexican jalapeno. Vegan? No worries, with soy-based cheese on offer. And for dessert? The Nutella Dream is as good as it sounds, topped with strawberries or banana.
Borek Bakehouse
Borek Bakehouse is equally famous for its gozlemes and filo boreks. They’re all freshly baked on the Elizabeth Street premises. Jostle for space at the counter in this no-nonsense takeaway cafe and make your choice. Will it be a spicy lamb gozleme, or chicken and vegetable? Boreks come in cheese and spinach, spicy lamb and potato-veg. Plus there are pides, falafels and more.
Mama’s Gozleme
Come down to River Terrace at Fed Square and look for the line of customers snaking in front of the red takeaway food truck. Mama’s Gozleme sells a choice of five options. Original cheese and spinach, or just cheese. Garden vegie, or spinach with chicken or beef. And watching your snack being prepared then cooked in front of you is all part of the fun. Catch Mama's Gozleme at the Europa Night Market until 25 October too.
