Melbourne’s oldest businesses
Melbourne is packed with shops, pubs and institutions that have been open for decades. These are the places that helped shape the city. Some have barely changed, others have evolved. But each holds a unique place in local history.
Captain Melville – established 1853
This pub has lived many lives, originally opening as Mack’s Hotel before becoming Captain Melville. Now it’s a popular venue for pints, parmas and pub dinners. The bluestone walls and timber beams are reminders of Melbourne’s gold rush past. Step inside and you’ll feel it.

Young & Jackson – established 1861
Right opposite Flinders Street Station, this iconic corner pub is one of the city's most recognisable. It's known for its heritage interiors and Chloe, the famous nude painting upstairs. Today it’s still a go-to for post-work drinks and sports on TV.
Mitre Tavern – established 1868
Tucked down an alleyway, the Mitre is considered Melbourne’s oldest surviving building. Built before 1850 as a private home, it’s now a charming spot for steak and a pint. The low ceilings and Tudor-style facade give it real old-world character.

City Hatters – established 1910
Under the clocks of Flinders Street Station, this hat shop has been fitting Melbourne’s finest for over a century. Top hats, boaters, bowlers – if it sits on your head, they’ve sold it. This neon-lit shop is still one of the best places to buy a proper hat.
The Hotel Windsor – established 1883
An icon of Spring Street, The Windsor is Australia’s only surviving grand 19th-century hotel. High tea here is a rite of passage, served under chandeliers and velvet drapes. It’s luxury with a serious side of history.

Hill of Content – established 1922
This bookshop on Bourke Street is a sanctuary for readers. Here you'll find classic literature, travel guides, poetry and a peaceful upstairs reading room. You can lose hours inside this iconic space. Expect thoughtful staff and real charm. After 103 years in the same spot, the store moved from 86 to 32 Bourke Street. Just 130 metres up the hill!
Jimmy Watson’s – established 1935
On Lygon Street, Jimmy Watson’s has long been a Carlton favourite. It’s one of the city’s original wine bars, with a leafy courtyard and a timeless feel. The menu is classic Italian, but with an Australian-leaning twist. Come for a Sunday roast and a glass of wine, stay for a bottle.

Quists – established 1938
Quists is a proper coffee spot that’s been fuelling Melburnians for generations. It was also the first coffee roaster in the city, roasting beans right there on Little Collins Street. The dark wood interiors haven’t changed much. Neither has the aroma of fresh coffee.
Pellegrini’s Espresso Bar – established 1954
Melbourne’s first espresso bar, and still one of its most iconic. Step off Bourke Street and into another era. Espresso, lasagne, granita – all from behind a long green counter. It's coffee history, culture and hospitality in one smoky cup.

Hearns Hobbies – established 1947
A haven for model train and plane fans, Hearns has been going strong since the '40s. Still family-run, still full of wonder. Kids and collectors alike flock here for the large range of figurines and model trains and toys. Truly a must-stop for any collector.
American Doughnut Kitchen – established 1950
Operating out of the same silver van at Queen Vic Market for decades, this is one of Melbourne’s most delicious traditions. Hot jam doughnuts come in a bag, sugar-dusted and straight from the fryer.

University Cafe – established 1952
This Lygon Street stalwart has been serving Italian food to students, professors and locals since the '50s. Sit outside, sip an espresso, and soak in the atmosphere. It’s a time capsule.
The Waiters Club – established 1947
Founded by Italian waiters after hours, this upstairs spot off Meyers Place is full of stories. Red-checked tablecloths, home-style pasta, and old-school service. They do things old-school, that is, cash only and no bookings. It's still one of the city’s most-loved secrets.
