Melbourne's best rooftop restaurants
Soar up for a feed at sun soaked rooftops, hidden gems and lush beer gardens in the sky.
State of Grace
Discover the heavenly world at Higher Grace, the rooftop of State of Grace. Settle in and soak up the views overlooking the city. The vibe is casual – think pizzas and share plates. Order cured meat boards, crispy haloumi and salt and vinegar squid for the table. Match with deliciously summery cocktails, tap beers and tinnies.
Johnny's Green Room
Johnny’s is back with a brand new fit-out and the same city skyline views we love. Find the neon-lit entry behind King and Godfree and fly up above Lygon Street for pizzas loaded with potato, prosciutto or mortadella. Pair with fresh salads and generous helpings of stracciatella and burrata. You can't say no to a limoncello sgroppino. The cocktail comes with a big scoop of lemon sorbet from downstairs neighbours, Pidapipo.
Fable Melbourne
Head for the skies and land on one of Melbourne's highest rooftops, 14 storeys up. Whether it's lunch, dinner or late-night nibbles, feast on hearty Mediterranean-inspired dishes while you enjoy the sweeping city views. Try the slow roasted lamb shoulder with labne, buttered prawns or spicy kebabs. The bespoke cocktail list is inspired by fables and stories throughout history. Try 'Caesar's nectar', made with fig-infused vodka.
Marameo
Host a pasta-fueled dinner party on the hidden rooftop terrace at Marameo. The space is relaxed and minimalistic, with artwork giving a playful nod to Marameo’s Italian roots. Tucked in amongst city buildings, you're hidden from view and left to concentrate on which spritz to try next. Indulge in ten cheese lasagne and cacio e pepe with black truffle. And stay on-theme with a Tuscan sangiovese.
Morris House
Melbourne has just earned itself a new multi-level venue featuring a lush rooftop beer garden. Head to the top level of Morris House for Wagyu beef burgers, spanner crab spaghetti, king salmon salad and eye fillet with chimichurri and fries. There's even a bottomless bagel brunch complete with endless espresso martinis. To drink, the signature cocktails include frozen vovo margs and an incredible pavlova daquiri.
Dom's Pizzeria
Come for the pizzas, stay for the top-floor cocktails. Dom's is a three-level party palace of fresh pies, pool comps and pretty city views. Hightail it to the roof for ghost pepper salami pizza and mozzarella croquettes. Stick around for dessert, the crème brûlée comes spiked with Amaro!
Imperial Hotel
This top-end spot is a historic pub dating back to 1858. Make a beeline for the large sun-soaked rooftop beer garden to check out the 360-degree views of the city. Pub staples are in high supply. Think parmas, steak sangas and stacked beef burgers. Ice cold beers are a no brainer, or try a refreshing watermelon margarita slushy.
Duke of Wellington
Melbourne’s oldest pub boasts an eye-popping panorama of Fed Square and the Forum from the rooftop. Up here, you’d never know this joint goes back to 1853, courtesy of the bar’s sleek modern fit-out. Slide into a leather booth and ponder The Duke's menu, from pan fried gnocchi to old-school pork chops.
Sojourn
Part rooftop bar, part local produce diner, 100 per cent your next laneway cocktail destination. Wander up Little Collins Street and let the royal blue façade of Sojourn sneak up on you out of nowhere. The uniquely designed shipping container-style spot is a hidden gem, right next to Scott Pickett's Chancery Lane. Now will it be orange confit duck leg or grass-fed beef brisket?
