The Well is a multimedia installation by Mila Faranov, exploring the artist’s matriarchal histories and Slavic heritage through stories told to her by her mother and grandmother, alongside family archives and handcraft traditions. Sculpture and video intertwine with personal mythology, ghosts, and folklore to form a haunting, immersive environment.
The work explores the idea that the past cannot be fully known. It reflects on this impossibility and explores the creation of personal mythology, paying homage to those who came before.
The Well becomes both symbol and space, associated with depth of emotion, nurture and communion, loss and death.
The Norla Dome, at The Mission to Sea Farers, is reminiscent of a portal into another time or place and is a significant piece of Melbourne’s architectural and nautical history.
Supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants and the Mission to Sea Farers.
