XYZ Photo Gallery presents an exhibition of photographs of Japan that occupy the overlap of a Venn diagram of what Australians are fascinated by and what Japanese see as theirs.
The gallery did an open call to Australians who had been to and photographed Japan since the beginning of 2022. 74 people responded with 681 photographs submitted. The gallery then called upon two friends of the gallery, one a Japanese photographer, the other a Japanese journalist, both having lived in two cultures, to select the photographs that illustrate their Japan.
For the gallery, the exhibition brings forward questions about how we travel. What are we looking to achieve? What do we seek? How important is the local culture? Do we seek out the local or are we happy with the packaged expression?
The gallery will have a monitor showing all the entries so that the visitor can see the bigger picture.
