Hugo Race: Convergence

  • Free
  • Art

Staring through the windshield into highways at high speed, the receding vanishing point exerts a hypnotic pull, compressing time during long drives. Artist Hugo Race seeks to capture the exhilaration of fleeting moments of beauty in strange landscapes and to manage the anxiety of long distances on unknown roads, and through taking the image to feel some sense of control over the situation.

At a certain point, instead of seeing only white lines and road surface, Race saw these moments as singularities, keyholes or portals into parallel realities and other dimensions. The photos were taken in the period 2008 to 2025, and each image has a highway code and country reference. Locations include Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece. All photographs for sale in a limited edition of five.

Saturday 28 Feb, spoken word introduction 3pm-3.30pm. Sunday 1 Mar, closing drinks 3pm-5pm.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

We accept the invitation in the Uluru Statement from the Heart and are committed to walking together to build a better future. For more information, visit Aboriginal Melbourne.
