HERstory: Remembering Australia’s Military Women

In HERstory, artist Carla Edwards honours the women who have served in Australia’s military forces, past and present. What began in 2022 as a small portrait project on the NSW Central Coast has grown into a remarkable national undertaking. Travelling more than 120,000 kilometres across five states and one territory, Carla has photographed and interviewed over 200 women who have served in war and peace, from trailblazers in the early women’s services to today’s integrated Army, Navy and Air Force.

This exhibition shines a light on women based in Victoria, sharing their stories of service, courage and contribution from 1942 to the present day. Through powerful portraits and personal reflections, HERstory pays tribute to the strength, resilience and legacy of Australia’s military women – those whose stories have too often gone untold.
