Making Modern Melbourne

  • Free
  • Exhibition

An optimistic new nation was created at the dawn of the twentieth century. Australia was self-governing, and Melbourne would be its temporary capital while Canberra was constructed.

This free exhibition at Old Treasury Building examines the tumultuous century that was to come, with two world wars and a Depression. But also, a ‘long boom’, multiculturalism, rights for all citizens, increased public transport and heritage laws which would protect the historic buildings we still have today.

In the exhibition highlight, compare historical photographs of Melbourne with recent images captured by local photographer Sarah Pannell. Discover a city with building heights limited to the length of the fire brigade’s ladder (12 storeys) grow so that skyscrapers dominate the skyline.

This is a must see exhibition for all Melburnians.
