Deafblind identity inextricably shapes how Joe conveys meaning to the world, using his hands and body to create dynamic movement, expressive forms, and vivid gestures in both his native language, Auslan, and his art.
Tactility is central to the creation and enjoyment of Joe’s sculptures, offering a hands-on experience for Deafblind audiences especially. Challenging visual dominance in the art world, Joe invites broader audiences to also engage via touch and experience sculpture from a Deafblind perspective.
Often underestimated due to his disability, Joe proudly demonstrates his artistic skill, showing that Deafblind people are capable of anything. Exploring the three-dimensional, tactile nature of sculpture has been a revelation, and the works achieved stand as a testament to the creative innovation sparked by Joe’s unique perspective and lived experience.
Supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants.
Launch: Saturday 4 October, 1pm to 3pm.
