Material Worlds

  • Talk
  • Design

Visit Walsh Street for Material Worlds, a conversation exploring architecture through a time-based and ecological lens.

Bronwen Main and Frank Burridge (MAIN&FRANK) and Andre Bonnice and Anna Jankovic (Simulaa) join for this talk. This session reflects on material-driven approaches that situate architecture within broader environmental systems, from agricultural bio-regional thinking to embodied carbon and regenerative design. Drawing on research and practice, the speakers will present projects spanning domestic, public, and experimental work, including collaborations exploring hemp, earth, bamboo, and other bio-based materials. The discussion will consider how architects navigate testing, risk, and material specification, and how their decisions shape environmental outcomes. Grounded in practice, the evening reflects on the architect’s role as a mediator between materials, makers, and ecosystems.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

We accept the invitation in the Uluru Statement from the Heart and are committed to walking together to build a better future. For more information, visit Aboriginal Melbourne.
