Grass, trees and memorial column in Flagstaff Gardens.

Flagstaff Gardens

The Flagstaff Gardens were established as a public garden in 1862. The gardens have an informal style, with stretches of lawn that today are the lunch spot of choice for local office workers.

Along with the lawns, the gardens feature eucalypts and Moreton Bay figs, avenues of elm trees, rose beds and sculptures.

A bowling club, playground, tennis courts and electric barbecues contribute to the gardens' recreational and informal character.

The gardens were named for the flagstaff erected in 1840 at the settlement's highest point, part of a signalling system between the burgeoning town of Melbourne and ships sailing into port.
