The Odyssey: From Scroll to Screen

  • Talk
  • Walking tour

Before you see it on the big screen, journey back to where it all began. Just in time for Christopher Nolan's anticipated film adaptation of The Odyssey, this Hellenic Museum guided tour unpacks one of the greatest stories ever told – through the eyes of the ancient Greeks themselves.

This fast-paced, one-hour crash course explores the origins of The Odyssey, from the poet Homer to the rich tradition of epic storytelling. As you move through the Hellenic Museum's collections, you'll explore the myths, heroes, and aftermath of the Trojan War, and discover how these stories were experienced and understood in the ancient world.

By the end, you'll have the context to see modern adaptations in a whole new light – ready to spot what's faithful, what's reimagined, and what still resonates after thousands of years. You might even impress your friends with some post-credits trivia, or add some historically-informed bite to your next Letterboxd review.
