Magnificence occurs at all scales across a city, from road markings to modernist statements, and through the expressions of its denizens. In a new series of paintings, Mark Bo Chu observes familiar and unfamiliar scenes across Melbourne, focusing on singular and collective subjects. Chu depicts freeways and festivals as shared public experiences, as well as work and friendship, cherished in private. In his gritty and vibrant style, he presses at what makes a moment monumental.
Mark Bo Chu is a painter of the everyday in Melbourne. His artwork has appeared in Vice, ABC, SBS, The Australian, and the New York Times. Chu is also a science researcher, publishing in venues like Cognition and Nature. He is a past writer for the Good Food Guide, and has recorded as a piano soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Chu currently writes for To Be Magazine.
