Annie and the Caldwells
Annie and The Caldwells are a family from Mississippi whose powerful disco soul sound stirs church congregations and dance club revellers alike. Their new album, Can't Lose My (Soul), on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label is 40 years in the making and has drawn international acclaim.
Headed by their mother, Ms Annie Caldwell, the songs on Can't Lose My (Soul) explore heavy themes of spirituality, struggle and redemption, all informed by their real-life experiences as an intergenerational family run by women, while propelled by vibrant, body-moving music. In these passionate performances, their personal stories transcend into a state of universal parable and salvation-driven ecstasy, resulting in the kind of communal uplift any preacher or DJ could envy.
