The Power of Geospatial Science: Promise and Peril

  • Talk
  • Workshop

As part of National Science Week, Geography Victoria partners with the Royal Society of Victoria to hold a symposium, 'The possibilities and perils of geospatial science: a focus on Victoria and Melbourne'.

Geospatial tools are changing the way we live, work and move around. We use them every day without thinking about it: when tracking a delivery or finding a nearby café. Satellites, drones and sensors manage traffic, respond to emergencies, monitor disasters, and constantly track our movements.

But all of these technologies raise questions about privacy, who controls location data, and whether everyone gets an equal say in how places are mapped and understood. Five fabulous speakers from industry, government and academia examine both the exciting applications of geospatial science and the less visible dangers that deserve closer public attention.

Refreshments included.

An Inspiring Victoria event as part of National Science Week.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
