RISING: Wednesday
Grocery store sushi and elderberry wine. Junkyards, smashed cars and dusty dive bars. A townie fling and weeds poking through the springs of a trampoline. Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman fills her tales of love, life and youthful misgiving with empathy, nuance and narrative flare.
The North Carolinian band’s sixth album Bleeds is unquestionably up there with their best. Hartzman’s Southern gothic short stories are matched by an invigorated hybrid of shoegaze and country. Details are lit up with lap steel and fuzz. Grunge riffs surge. Bluegrass rolls and tumbles on down the road.
Supported by the formidable fuzz of bedroom artist Alien Nosejob on the Sunday show and Naarm synth-punks Season 2 on the Monday night.
