Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre

  • Learning
  • Community

On the corner of Faraday and Cardigan streets in Carlton, the Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre is the area's first creative, learning and community space.

Housed in a restored 139-year-old building, the centre is home to a comprehensive library featuring over 40,000 items in a wide range of formats and languages, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

The library also offers a computer lab, recording studio, meeting rooms, community activity spaces, a café and free wi-fi, providing a welcoming and accessible space for all members of the community to read, connect, learn and create. Incontinence product disposal bins are also available at this location and can be found in the men's and all-gender toilets.

The library was named after Kathleen Alice Syme (1896-1977), who was a journalist, company director and welfare worker.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
