Having lived and worked in Italy for several years and now dividing his time between there and his studio in Daylesford, Brian Reberger finds his creative vision is continually shaped by these magical places. His art explores tension between illumination and obscurity, inviting viewers to experience drama through contrast. In Silence in Shadow, he brings together oil paintings and photography with gold or silver leaf to evoke the spirit of Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro.
The exhibition’s central theme is the interplay of ‘light and darkness’, where moments of revelation and mystery emerge from contrast. Inspired by Caravaggio’s mastery of tenebrism, Reberger presents subjects that appear to float on a void, illuminated by an almost theatrical beam. These works delve into the beauty that light can reveal within darkness, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own experiences of clarity and enigma.
