Wolff Architects: from Jokes to Drawings

  • Talk
  • Design

Heinrich Wolff is an architect, contractor and project manager. He co-directs Wolff Architects in Cape Town, with Ilze Wolff. His work has won the RIBA’s Lubetkin Prize for the best building in the world outside the UK, and the Daimler Chrysler Award for South Africa’s best architect.

According to Wolff, 'The structure of good architecture has the structure of a joke. It is a theory and it is mine! This is what I do. More precisely, this is how I do it. A self-awareness of our working methods can advance the character of our work. It humanises the creative act. You are invited to join a conversation about design methods and the mad yolks required by the recipe. Let us work out the difference between a wink and a twitch. Intentionality to the architect is like timing to the comedian. Sometimes I am compelled to fork off to the left while designing a building. Somewhere between studiousness and deviousness lies the moment of breakthrough'.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
