Shaynell Barboza: Essence

Essence is a portrait series exploring femininity, cultural identity and the quiet presence of women.

Created on natural wood, each portrait draws inspiration from women of different cultural backgrounds, using traditional dress, pattern, jewellery and adornment as visual traces of heritage and individual identity. Detailed linework and cross-hatching sit against the exposed grain of the wood, while touches of gold bring warmth and connection across the collection.

Rather than attempting to define or represent an entire culture, Essence focuses on the individual woman – her expression, her presence and the way heritage can be carried through generations while remaining uniquely her own.

At its heart, the collection is a celebration of women simply being: grounded in who they are, connected to where they come from, and present in their own essence.
