Hyperworlds: Unreal Cartography

  • Free
  • Art

An exhibition from Allanah Sarafian exploring maps as emotional and ideological objects.

Inspired by medieval mapping methods where the church occupied the ideological centre and the margins teemed with the strange and unknown; this collection turns toward the periphery. Sculptural textile terrains focus on the 'othered' edges of belief systems – the imagined, the misremembered and the speculative. Living within a diaspora, gaps in knowledge are often filled with invention. These works chart those unstable spaces, mapping inherited longing and constructed memory instead of fixed geography.

Through layered yarn and raised surfaces each piece proposes a world shaped by imagination rather than accuracy. Centres dissolve and borders thicken. Territories swell and distort. These hyperreal landscapes resist orientation and refuse stability. They suggest that every map carries a worldview - even the maps we invent in our minds.

Launch: Thursday 14 May, 5.30pm to 7pm.
