Arabella Strachan: Natural Light

  • Free
  • Art

Natural Light explores, through a series of illuminated textile sculptures and tufted artworks, aspects of nature's many processes, patterns, motifs and spectacular creations that are a part of the universal past, present and imagined future.

Each work has its distinct story, that either remembers, highlights, or speculates on our shared future, past and present, with reference to life’s early evolution, plant and cosmic structures that make up the pattern of the cosmos.

These motifs found on both the macro and micro scale seek to draw connection to the natural world and its patterns to ourselves, making clear the parallels in a world where we continually separate ourselves from the natural world. In making these works and in this connection there is an endeavour to emphasise the preciousness and inter-connectedness of life, in the hope that we will take better care of the natural world and each other.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
