50th Anniversary: Chinatown Arches

  • Free
  • Family and kids

Built in the 1970s, Melbourne Chinatown’s arches have become some of the most recognisable cultural landmarks along Little Bourke Street. Created as part of the revitalisation of Chinatown, the arches reflect traditional Chinese architectural influences and symbolise the history, resilience, and lasting contribution of Melbourne’s Chinese Australian community.

The 50th anniversary celebration will bring the community together with a lion and dragon parade through the Chinatown archways, cultural performances in Chinatown Plaza, and a special exhibition at the Chinese Museum. The exhibition will explore the history of the arches and the development of Melbourne’s Chinatown, featuring contributions from individuals and community organisations.

Through these celebrations, visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about Melbourne’s multicultural heritage and the important role Chinatown continues to play in the cultural life of the city.
