The Shrine of Remembrance, dedicated in 1934 to commemorate First World War veterans, is the national war memorial of Victoria, honouring all Australians who have served their country.
Visitors can enter the Shrine’s classical interior and discover the peaceful atmostphere of the sanctuary. They can also visit the Galleries of Remembrance, featuring over 800 artworks, historical artefacts and personal effects. Breathtaking vistas of Melbourne can be seen via the balcony.
Admission to the Shrine is free, however donations are welcome. Tours run daily from the visitor centre at 11am and 12.45pm. Services of Remembrance are held every 30 minutes from 10.30am. During the service, a ray of light illuminates the word ‘love’ on the Stone of Remembrance embedded below the sanctuary’s marble floor.
The sanctuary was specially designed so that a ray of sunlight would strike the word ‘love’ at 11am on 11 November, to commemorate the armistice that ended the First World War.
