Gunawarra Re-Creation
Gunawarra Re-Creation by Taungurung, Nirim Baluk playwright Isobel Paipadjerook Morphy-Walsh and directed by award-winning ILBIJERRI Theatre Company Artistic Director Andrea James, is a contemporary play grounded in an uninterrupted ancestral storyline, expressed through memory, song and dance, where past and present collide.
The play draws from the traditional Kulin story of Gunawarra – the black swan – and how it came to have black feathers, and follows three generations of women reconnecting on Taungurung Country after significant life disruptions.
This powerful production is more than theatre – it is a transfer of ancestral energy, woven with care, pride and deep cultural memory highlighting the strength, authority and wisdom carried by Blak women, and their extraordinary capacity to heal.
Gunawarra Re-Creation is proud to be part of NAIDOC Week – 50 Years of Deadly.
