The Grey Garden surrounds the Temple of the Winds and winds down the bluestone steps to Northern Gate. Revitalised in the 1980s, the garden beds of this collection are ornamental in theme and display a range of grey and white foliage plants. The waxes, hairs, scales and spines that colour these plants are what allow them to thrive in such harsh conditions. These striking plants require little water making them perfect for an increasingly hot and dry climate.
Managing this area of the Gardens has many challenges, predominantly working the garden beds on such a steep escarpment down to the Tan track. Amy Downie, Curator of the Grey Garden, will lead a walk through the collection that focuses on conservation horticulture and showcases cliff-dwelling species.
Please note the steep steps leading to this collection limit mobility access.
