While a ‘Collection of Oaks' is shown on Mueller’s 1865 Gardens map, Ferdinand von Mueller first used Oak Lawn for systematic groups of plants, the earliest reference to oaks on the lawn noted in 1880.
With guide Mali Wilson, visit the Quercus coccifera, the first of 500 seedlings from the National Trust’s (Victoria) Anzac Centenary Gallipoli Oaks commemorative project. Hear the story of the White Oak that fell unexpectedly in December 2019 and appreciate how this fallen oak has become a haven for insects and bugs. Reflect on new plantings that have come all the way from the sunny climes of California, Mexico and Texas.
Mali explores the many species on show so you can understand why the oak is so revered in history and admired for its majestic stature. There will be an opportunity to stay on after the walk to take photographs with the Friends' Photography Group.
