The Middle of Your Story: Sustain Tension, Maintain Interest

  • Workshop
  • Events

You’ve got a great idea and you’ve written a brilliant opening, but what happens next? How do you keep your readers interested? This workshop explores tension in fiction and looks at ways in which you can enhance your writing so the load-bearing section of your story - the middle - is richer and stronger.

Expect writing exercises, ideas, structured writing time and a friendly, supportive approach, led by author Michael Winkler.

Winkler is a writer of fiction and non-fiction. His novel Grimmish was shortlisted for the 2022 Miles Franklin Literary Award. He has self-published three titles, as well as writing books for Penguin, Hardie Grant and Melbourne University Press.

Bring a pen and paper or a fully charged laptop to join the writing exercises.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
