Melbourne's Windsor hotel is the country's only surviving grand 19th-century city hotel. It's also the only official 'grand' Victorian-era hotel, and provides a suitably dramatic backdrop to Treasury and Parliament House.
Flaunting high Victorian architecture in Renaissance Revival style, the hotel was built in 1884 by architect Charles Webb. Originally called the Grand, the hotel's notable architectural features include the ballroom, main staircase, twin mansard roofed towers and the building's stone sculptures.
Today the five-star Windsor continues the hotel's longstanding traditions of luxury and indulgence, offering a sumptuous afternoon tea, bistro dining, a restaurant and wine bar, and the popular Cricketer's Bar.
