Bookish Club returns with special guest Jan Fran who will dive into Percival Everett’s irreverent and sharply satirical novel, Erasure.
In Erasure, frustrated author and professor Thelonious ‘Monk’ Ellison is on the downswing. When he writes a parody of the ghetto novel genre – billed as an ‘authentic’ take on the Black experience – he is thrust into instant fame and fortune. What follows is a scathing, satirical indictment of publishers, readers and the insidious biases of a marketplace that seeks to dictate who gets to tell what stories.
Adapted into the Academy Award-winning movie American Fiction, Erasure is a witty, bold and merciless novel that raises questions about racial politics, identity, authorship, representation and the weight of cultural expectations.
Join Jan Fran for an afternoon of drinks, light fare and robust literary conversation in this warm and intimate book club event. You’ll get the opportunity to share your thoughts on the novel throughout the event too.
