Artist Workshop: Rice Clay Sculpture Making

  • Workshop
  • Activity

Inspired by Chinese culture and the comfort of a warm bowl of congee, artist Vivian Qiu has been exploring the creative potential of rice since 2020, bringing new possibilities to this humble ingredient.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to turn ordinary rice into a sustainable, organic and versatile material – rice clay. From bowls and small sculptures to delicate pieces of jewelry, rice clay can be shaped into unique creations by your own hands.

In this workshop, you will learn how to mix cooked rice with different fibres, especially embroidery floss. You'll also learn about the dehydration process, and moulding techniques to transform it into beautiful, usable art pieces.
