Yarning Strong

  • Free
  • Talk

In a thoughtful conversation on how musicians and artists stay true to their cultural identity while navigating the mainstream music industry, First Nations artists open up about community, resilience and what it takes to find your voice as conversations about mental health take centre stage.

Kamilaroi/Samoan beat-mistress Becca Hatch, Wemba Wemba hip-hop artist Philly and Gunai/Kurnai, Yorta Yorta and Wiradjuri DJ, designer and activist Sky Thomas (Soju Gang) share personal stories about using music as a tool for self-discovery, healing and growth. They discuss navigating the triumphs and difficulties of being working artists and the tools they’ve found on their journeys to support mental well-being and build community.

This will be an inspiring discussion about the realities of working in the music industry today as a First Nations person, with host Willem Brussen – with a special performance by Philly.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
