Sonny and The Sunsets

  • Music
  • Entertainment

Beloved San Francisco songwriter Sonny Smith returns to Australian shores this October with his cult garage-pop/folk-rock outfit Sonny & The Sunsets — this time backed by an all-star Aussie lineup featuring Steph Hughes (Dick Diver), Shaun Gionis (The Green Child, Boomgates) and Mark Monnone (The Lucksmiths, Monnone Alone). This special Melbourne headline show brings Sonny’s singular songbook to the stage with jangly charm, melodic warmth and plenty of character.

Across more than a dozen albums, Sonny & The Sunsets have built a world all their own — one of sun-faded boardwalks, late-night diners, lonesome motel rooms and backstreet parties. The band’s sound blends 60s pop, garage rock, country soul, doo-wop and lo-fi folk, woven together by Sonny’s unmistakable voice and gently surreal storytelling. A true cult figure in the American indie world, Sonny’s work spans far beyond music — he’s also a playwright, filmmaker, and visual artist, and that creativity spills into every show.
