Ethics of Restoration: The Everyday vs. The Unexpected

  • Art
  • Talk

How effective are Codes of Ethics in a crisis? What principles guide conservation efforts when facing issues of conflict, political turmoil, natural disaster, climate change, and catastrophes like the 2019 Notre-Dame fire?

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) provide global frameworks on best practice in cultural heritage management; but how well do these guidelines operate in emergencies? Are they still relevant across different countries and contexts?

Local and international experts Michelle Stevenson and Deborah Tout-Smith from Museums Victoria, and Kate Gray, Lovell Chen and Eric Pallot from ICOMOS France, unpack the complexities and challenges surrounding the preservation and restoration of iconic buildings in an everchanging world.
