The Female Ward Tour at Old Melbourne Gaol explores what life was like for women in Melbourne, how they were treated within the justice system, and the work they did.
Before the Female Ward was built, women were housed with male prisoners. Whilst afforded separate cells they were nonetheless forced to endure the indignities and harassment that came with this arrangement. Old Melbourne Gaol was built in 1847 and it wasn’t until 20 years later that the additional wing was completed. Elizabeth Scott, the first woman hanged in Victoria, was more than likely imprisoned in this new ward.
Although the ward has since been demolished, this unique tour offers visitors the chance to hear the stories of some notable characters that truly highlight the hardships they faced.
The tour includes both the gaol's grounds and the gaol itself. General Admission entry to the gaol is included in the ticket price.
This event is part of the Australian Heritage Festival (Victoria).
