Embodied Connection: West African Dance, Ritual and Stories

  • Free
  • Family and kids

This workshop invites participants of all dance backgrounds and experience levels to explore the body as a vessel of ritual, identity and cultural knowledge.

Engaging with West African dance traditions, the workshop explores how ancient knowledge systems are embodied and expressed through movement. Participants will explore movement as a living cultural knowledge system through which we experience interconnected ways of being in the world.

Facilitated by Lamine Sonko alongside dancers and musicians from the National Theatre of Senegal, the workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience cultural practices from Senegal’s leading performing artists.

The program includes a 45-minute talk exploring cultural knowledge systems followed by a 60-minute movement class accompanied by live percussion.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
