Auto-Photo: A Life in Portraits

  • Free
  • Art

This exhibition celebrates the contribution of Alan Adler (1932-2024) to Melbourne. For over fifty years, Adler operated and maintained photobooths across the city.

His work meant generations of people were able to record themselves, their relationships and create personal and expressive images using his photobooths. This exhibition also marks 100 years since Siberian-emigre Anatol Josepho filed a patent for his ‘Photomaton’ – a coin-operated photobooth, in New York City. This exhibition is among many worldwide events which mark this important centenary and reflect on the photobooth’s power to delight and inspire.

Curated by Catlin Langford with Christopher Sutherland and Jessie Norman (Metro Auto Photo).

‘Auto-Photo: A Life in Portraits’ is a Centre for Contemporary Photography exhibition, presented in partnership with RMIT Culture.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.
