Melbourne in two days

View from Eureka Skydeck in Melbourne
With two days in Melbourne, add Collins Street, Docklands, Eureka Skydeck and an evening's entertainment to the one-day itinerary.

Morning

On your second day in Melbourne, take a guided walk following the Golden Mile Heritage Trail, a line of gold plaques embedded in the pavement. The route takes you along the length of Collins Street and its marvellous collection of High Victorian buildings. Keep an eye out for the line-up of stunning Gothic fancies: the ANZ Gothic Bank with its flamboyant interior, the neighbouring former Stock Exchange, and the Olderfleet, Winfield and Rialto buildings with their turrets, towers and polychromatic brickwork. Continue to the top of Collins Street, where the neoclassical Treasury Building and Parliament House provide a grand architectural full stop.

Lunchtime

Rest your feet and ride the tram to see the city's cutting-edge modern architecture at Docklands. Shop at fashion outlets and speciality stores in Harbour Town, photograph the quirky urban sculptures, and choose from the swag of restaurants and cafes overlooking the bay at Central Pier, NewQuay or Victoria Harbour with its landscaped Docklands Park.

Afternoon

Take an afternoon wander through the Royal Botanic Gardens, following winding paths to the central lake and walking over to the Shrine of Remembrance. For a different perspective, see Melbourne from the water on a Yarra River cruise or from the sky-high vantage point of the 88th floor at the Eureka Skydeck. Staying on ground level, see where Ned Kelly breathed his last at the spooky Old Melbourne Gaol or admire mid-Victorian grandeur at the GPO, cleverly transformed into the shopping paradise H&M.

Evening

Pair tapas hors d'oeuvres with a glass of fine red at a laneway wine bar, or nibble bar snacks while sipping a chilled glass of ale at Federation Square. For dinner, make your way through to Crossley Street and choose from superb Italian at Becco or Asian hawker-style fare in stylish surrounds at Gingerboy. If it's an evening of entertainment you're after, see what's on at Hamer Hall or watch the fireball show at Crown Casino before visiting Crown's collection of venues and bars.
