Melbourne for families

Family playing in a Melbourne park
From playgrounds and interactive museums to jumping castles and a pirate ship, Melbourne is packed with fun activities for kids of all ages.

Morning

There's plenty of fun in the city centre at ACMI, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, with hands-on movie-making workshops. ArtPlay at nearby Birrarung Marr has a program of events for little ones, and of course there's always something happening at Federation Square. Step back in time on a visit to Cooks' Cottage in the Fitzroy Gardens, where the stories of Captain James Cook are brought to life. Drop into the Melbourne Visitor Centre for more ideas, or ask a mobile City Ambassador for other tips. For a big day out, say hello to the animals at Melbourne Zoo in Parkville, just outside the city centre.

Lunchtime

Just over the bridge on the banks of the Yarra River, there's a world of lunchtime food choices at the Southgate food court. If the kids can't decide, Bluetrain's large menu has something for everyone. Take a wander along Southbank while you're here to watch the buskers and play sailors aboard the good ship Polly Woodside moored at South Wharf.

Afternoon

Melbourne's Docklands means one-stop fun for kids. Take a ride on the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, Australia's only giant observation wheel. Get your skates on and go for a spin at O'Brien Group Arenam, with free lessons for beginners, or play a round of glow-in-the-dark Black Light Mini Golf. If it's raining, go indoor rock climbing at Hardrock in the city centre, or cool off in the North Melbourne Recreation Centre's play pools when the summer heat is on.

Evening

See Melbourne sparkle from Eureka Skydeck 88 – time your visit for dusk and watch the city light up. For dinner, find all your favourite crepes on the menu at Roule Galette or go for hamburgers at Huxtaburger, both near Flinders Lane. See what's screening at Melbourne Museum's IMAX theatre, where characters come to life on the world's third-biggest cinema screen, or hold hands with your teenagers on a spooky Old Melbourne Gaol ghost tour.
