Melbourne for sports lovers

This itinerary showcases Australia's sporting capital, home to Australian Rules football, cricket, soccer, rugby, horseracing and tennis.

Morning

Start the day at Australia's spiritual sporting home, the Melbourne Cricket Ground – affectionately known as the 'G – where the National Sports Museum reveals the history, thrills and spills of cricket, AFL, horseracing, the Olympics and more. Take a personally guided tour of the MCG with the Shane Warne hologram, or get hands-on at the interactive multi-sport gallery Game On! Of course, it's odds on that lovers of racing will want to pay homage to Australia's most famous racehorse, Phar Lap, at the Melbourne Museum in Carlton, and take a guided walking tour at Flemington Racecourse, home of Australia's most famous horserace, the Melbourne Cup.

Lunchtime

Go on a pre-lunch tour of Rod Laver Arena, home of the Australian Open tennis tournament, or play in the champions' footsteps by booking a court at Melbourne Park. Stroll along the riverside walkway to Federation Square, passing the Birrarung Marr parklands, and recharge with a bowl of ramen noodles at Japanese-inspired Chocolate Buddha.

Afternoon

From March to September don't miss a game of football at the MCG or Etihad Stadium, or a Test cricket match at the 'G in summer. Any time of year, visit the footy players' change rooms at Etihad Stadium and take a walk through the umpire's tunnel on a behind-the-scenes tour. Get active in the late afternoon with a game of Black Light Mini Golf at Docklands, a gentle jog around the Tan running track circling the Botanic Gardens or a few laps in the historic Melbourne City Baths.

Evening

Enjoy a drink with a burger or steak from the pub-style bar menu at the Transport Public Bar in Federation Square, then head over to the city's sporting heartland, Melbourne Park. During the Australian Open in January, watch an evening match of tennis at the Rod Laver Arena. Catch the ice hockey or netball action at Melbourne Arena or see what teams are battling it out under the twinkling lights at AAMI Park, home ground of the Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart A-League soccer teams, Melbourne Storm rugby league club and Melbourne Rebels rugby union team.
