Sutr Santati: Then. Now. Next.

  • Art
  • Exhibition

Sutr Santati translates to ‘the continuity of thread’ in Hindi. As the exhibition title, it is a metaphor for ongoing dialogues in Indian society which shape its evolution, bridging the past with the future. Explore ideals of organic and slow consumerism, ecological preservation and the collaborative efforts which are needed to push towards these ideals.

This limited-time exhibition coincides with 75 years of India’s Independence, bringing together diverse textile traditions from across the country, created by some of the most prominent contemporary artisans, craftspeople and designers.

The exquisite and varied textiles were created using the processes of hand weaving, embroidery, resist-dyeing, printing, painting, appliqué, and more.

The themes, techniques and materials of specially commissioned fabrics in the exhibition are viewed through the lens of innovation, defining the country’s contemporary artistic landscape, and to push its creativity into the future.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection the Wurundjeri, Bunurong, Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wadawurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin have to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

We are committed to our reconciliation journey, because at its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples, for the benefit of all Victorians.
