'A wounded deer – leaps highest, I've heard the hunter tell' – Emily Dickinson
Dire situations can be the catalyst of a transformation into power, but they can also be the last leap of faith before a quick demise.
And so it is with the enchantment and deceptive coda of bygone era fairy tales; these were stories to take heed of, not everything is as it seems. These tales of entrapment are indeed disguised and embodied as tomes of beguiling beauty. Depictions of mysterious other lands, forests, castles, temptations or escape from harrowing circumstances, magic, fate, and so often violence.
I've Heard the Hunter Tell is an exhibition by Mila Faranov that alludes to the themes of innocence lost, the conflicting romance and torment of the mostly female, often children, always naïve, protagonists. Combining unease with seduction through the motifs of a living wallpaper and nostalgic illustrations, entrancing patterns disclose the insidious yet captivating nature of these tales.
