A Foreign Field

  • Film

This documentary is grounded in the Battle of Fromelles, which took place on 19 July 1916 and was the first major action involving Australian troops on the Western Front. It proved disastrous with almost 2,000 Australians killed in attacks on strong German positions.

After a visit to Fromelles in 2002, a Melbourne schoolteacher embarked on a mission to try and account for these missing soldiers. His tireless work came to fruition when in 2008, a team from Glasgow University were commissioned to investigate a suspected mass burial site at Pheasant Wood. 'A Foreign Field' follows the team’s delicate work uncovering the site in a bid to bring dignity and peace to the fallen.

A live Q&A will follow the screening, with those involved in the investigation.

A catered lunch option is available at $15 per person. Bookings are essential.

The annual Battle of Fromelles commemoration service will then take place at the Cobbers Memorial at 1.30pm. All are welcome.
