St Johns Southgate presents the cantatas of JS Bach in the context for which they were written - liturgical Lutheran church services.
The services include organ music on the splendid 1992 Smenge pipe organ and congregational singing of chorales. This Eucharist service includes JS Bach's cantata, Du wahrer Gott und Davis Sohn (BWV 23) for three soloists, chorus, strings, two oboes, four trombones and continuo, with St Johns Bach Orchestra, directed by Matthias Unterkolfer. Also, Crucifixus (from Credo of the Mass in B Minor, BWV 232), Christus factus est (Anton Bruckner). The final chorale of BWV 23 'Christe du Lamm Gottes', a setting of Luther's Agnus Dei, concluded the 1725 version of Bach's Johannespassion.
