For lovers of words and language, the Melbourne Spoken Word and Poetry Festival is an exciting two-week program of performances, slams, workshops, open mics and showcases featuring nationally and internationally recognised spoken word artists and poets, with 35 events across 18 days.

The festival launch will be at the Toff in Town and will feature renowned poets Maxine Beneba Clarke, wani, Neil Morris, Rochelle D'silva, Sean M Whelan, Peter Bakowski and Sigrun Mikula.

Many of Melbourne's spoken word and poetry conveners will be hosting special events and showcases of the finest poets.

The festival will close with an international headline poet, Moody Black from South Carolina, as well as a rich selection of Melbourne poets including Melbourne Spoken Word Prize winner Alan Pentland, XYZ Prize winner Quinn Eades and Victorian Poetry Slam champ Sharifa Tartoussi, plus Tariro Mavondo, Steve Smart and Roshelle Fong.
