 Michaels Camera Museum

A visit to the world’s largest private camera collection in the heart of downtown Melbourne, is a voyage through time which includes some of the most recognised, rare, unique and iconic cameras since the late 1800s.

The museum houses more than 10,000 items, with approximately 3,000 on display at any one time. The display is rotated and updated on a regular basis, so periodic visits allows viewers to enjoy a different segment of the world’s most comprehensive camera collection ever collated and made available to the general public.

Amongst the significant rare pieces, the museum boasts a rarely seen WWII Japanese Naval Machine Gun camera and the Hasselblad Space Camera used by NASA. The museum also features Zeiss cameras with military insignia, talking cameras, the first cameras with electronic shutters, early autofocus cameras, rapid cameras, APS cameras, 110 cameras, 126 cameras, spy cameras, a vast array of limited edition and gold cameras, Olympus Ferrari cameras, instamatics, box cameras, Polaroid cameras, early pro and consumer digital cameras, light meters, movie cameras, projectors, stereo cameras and more.

The museum is frequented by photographic enthusiasts from around the globe. It’s not unusual to find senior executives from major Japanese and European camera manufacturers pointing out cameras their companies made before they were even born.
