Bold, vibrant, evocative and reveling in spontaneity, Soni Irawan is a contemporary painter and printmaker from Indonesia.
Soni is also a musician and one of the founders of a Yogyakarta experimental band, Seek Six Sick, therefore his artwork is greatly influenced by the spirit and energy of rock music: his choice of artistic techniques and medium are in line with his musical practice. Like jamming sessions, his canvases are filled with spontaneous strokes, sketchy figures and cut out pieces. He chooses oil bars to draw his lines since the medium gives him the similar feel of roughness and boldness as the sound created by a guitar – the instrument he plays in the band. His subject matter, however, is largely personal that revolve around his families and his environment with the underlying interest in capturing the spirit of human survival in everyday life.
Born in 1975, Soni Irawan completed his study in the Visual Art Faculty, Fine Arts Department, majoring in Printmaking at the Indonesian Art Institute situated in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Soni will also be live painting a new work at No Vacancy during the exhibition run, so come visit and take part in this rare opportunity to see the artist at work.
Soni Irawan is presented as part of Mapping Melbourne 2018.
