Award-winning First Nations choreographer and dancer from Bundjulung (Australia) and Ngapuhi (New Zealand) territories, Amrita Hepi takes the floor with the creation of a new collaborative dance work.
Taking the ground beneath our feet as her starting point, Amrita will engage with many dance communities to consider experiences, traditions, country and conditions underfoot – and to ultimately map and construct a new dance floor and place of belonging for all.
The floor will act as a choreographic score and springboard for a salon of performances from Amrita, collaborators and key members of Melbourne’s community of dance makers.
The dance floor will be activated through a series of performances, launching with the Opening Afternoon on 18 January, featuring Amrita and collaborators, and closing with Leaps + Beats on 29 February, a party featuring local dance luminaries Deep Soulful Sweats to celebrate the extra leap night of the year.
The residency will commence with Dance Reel on 2 December, a dance film program projected at massive scale onto the room’s 19th-century walls and columns. Shelve your shoes and immerse yourself in dance, and relax or respond with your own moves in the darkened surrounds.
