The Drunken Poet, or just the Poet, as it’s known to those who have sipped its Guinness and stamped their feet on the floorboards to local music, is the real deal amongst Irish pubs.
Right opposite the Queen Victoria Market in West Melbourne. the Poet provides a space for some of Melbourne’s finest original and traditional music six nights a week. Each month the spoken word hits the boards, with contemporary poetry readings given by local and international writers.
Tuesday night is Trivia night if your brain is up to it and with its diverse crowd, ‘The Poet’ attracts as many overseas friends as it does local regulars. Best of all the entertainment is free and they make the best toastie this side of your own kitchen.
